Highclere Castle, Berkshire RG20

Description:

Highclere Castle, Berkshire RG20

Holding an event at Highclere Castle leaves a special memory long after the occasion has passed. The famous backdrop of the Castle is an exceptional setting to launch a new product, hold a discrete meeting or host a celebration.

The first written records of the estate date back to 749 when an Anglo-Saxon King granted the estate to the Bishops of Winchester. Bishop William of Wykeham built a beautiful medieval palace and gardens in the park. Later on, the palace was rebuilt as Highclere Place House in 1679 when it was purchased by Sir Robert Sawyer, the direct ancestor of the current Earl of Carnarvon.  In 1842, Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament, transformed the house into the present day Highclere Castle.

Welcome your guests to the most recognisable house in the world to see the unique wall coverings of the Saloon, or the intricate woodcarvings in the Library and the outstanding art in the Dining Room, as seen in Downton Abbey. Our guides have exceptional knowledge of the building, artwork and furniture with anecdotes to match. We are able to tailor your private tour to compliment your group size, interest and the time of year you hope to visit.

We are delighted to be able to offer you the option of hiring the Castle and surrounding Gardens exclusively for your event. Brides are welcome to prepare for their day in an elegant south-facing bedroom in the Castle before descending the sweeping Oak Staircase into the Saloon, which sits at the very heart of the Castle. The Saloon is licensed for civil marriage ceremonies.  We have a dedicated wedding co-ordinator here to help you plan your day, and be on-hand throughout.

Highclere Castle is surrounded by 1000 acres of sweeping parkland, designed by Capability Brown in 1771.  The tracks and woodlands have been used for car launches, cross-country biking, quad bikes, orienteering and other outdoor pursuits.

Capacities: Theatre 60 / Receptions 150 / Dining 24

Larger numbers can be catered for using a marquee within the beautiful Castle grounds.
